Just working to find items and them being rare makes it feel that much better. Personally I enjoy Low Level Dueling- (lvl 30 dueling) If you like hunting rare things in games you will be perfectly at home. It's very addicting, much more rng loot pinata than d3 by a lot. You can play for hours without gaining anything, or play for 30 minutes and get top tier items. Everything in this game progress wise is what items drop and when you level up. But even the whole Ubers event and Diablo Clone event are also based around rewarding and rare pieces of gear. Some people make characters specifically geared to defeat the hardest endgame challenge available, the Uber Bosses most notably smiter paladins. For example hammer paladins just being kinda all around amazing for dmg and tanking anything, certain builds for notably the sorceress, barbarian and necromancers to stack the magic find stat to try to find rarer loot more often, some of these characters being literally made to farm one single area in the game, like a pit zerker, pit poison necro, ancient tunnels cold sorceress etc. Making an all around good character is possible, but more people make multiple characters for different jobs. The endgame instead is about crafting a highly specific character aiming for certain items to perform certain tasks. There is no just stack one attribute your class needs like intelligence on mage sort of thing, there is no gear score, no rifts or repeatable content that scales forever. Your character in diablo2 is entirely based around these finite limits making you choose what to spec and what gear to grind for. However these stats do not work the way they do in d3. You also get 5 attribute points each level to put towards strength, dexterity, vitality and energy. In diablo 2 your level is statically capped at a really tough to reach 99 and you get a skillpoint to spend in the skill tree each level and some extras as quest rewards for a total of 110 skill points. The endgame of diablo2 mainly consists of running the story stuff you've already beaten over and over to farm certain very good items you need for your build.
